Research Project: History of the Victorian Womens Domestic Violence Movement

My name is Jacqui Theobald and I am undertaking the research project History of the Victorian Womens Domestic Violence Movement at RMIT University in collaboration with Domestic Violence Victoria. The research forms the basis of my PhD.

The research is being undertaken by me in consultation with my supervisors, Dr Suellen Murray and Associate Professor Judith Smart in the Centre for Applied Social Research in the School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning at RMIT University. It will document the history of the Victorian Women’s Refuge Movement from the perspectives of those who have worked in services from its beginnings in 1974 to the present. Despite the gains made by the Victorian movement in both service development and social policy concerning domestic violence, there has been no comprehensive study of any of the state-based refuge movements in Australia. The project will seek to acknowledge the activists and community-sector women’s organisations that made up the movement. In particular, little attention has been paid to date to the diversity of organisations that comprised the movement.

The project which will involve interviews with around fifty people who have been, and/or are currently, involved in working in the domestic violence service sector in Victoria. Archival sources, government documents, policy statements and other literature will also be reviewed. It is anticipated the research will be completed by mid 2010.

For further information, any questions regarding the project may be directed to myself on 9925 9911 or 0421 594 920 or by email on jacqui.theobald@rmit.edu.au. You may also contact my senior supervisor Dr Suellen Murray on 9925 3929 or suellen.murray@rmit.edu.au.

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS!!

- This project has been underway since early 2007. Its aims are to document the history of the Domestic Violence Services Movement since it began in 1974. So far a number of interviews have been undertaken as well as several focus groups for those who worked in refuges during the 1970s and 1980s. This time around, the focus group is for those who have worked in related services including refuges, outreach services, the crisis line and DVRC during the 1990s. This is not exclusive to those who have only worked during the 1990s however I am also very interested in the perspective of people who began working in the domestic violence sector during these years.

Any questions about the focus group, or the project more broadly, can be directed to Jacqui Theobald. Details about the focus group are as follows:
